Access Systems provide the means by which to enter and exit an area. Consideration should be given to usability and interface with other plant and workers around, and any area where access is taking place should be correctly cordoned off to stop persons entering who are unauthorised to do so. Harness should be used to connect a user to the winch or rope being used to support the user as they access the area.
It is best practice for any access equipment that there are 2 modes of support – a primary mode and a secondary mode. Primary Mode is what is being used for the access e.g. a ladder, step irons, man riding winch.
Secondary Mode is a redundancy measure in case the Primary Mode fails, the most popular example of this is a Fall Arrest Block with a Recovery Winch.
